Diverticulitis
This is an infection of pockets in the colon. They are painful, and can be dangerous if left untreated. The easiest way to deal with them is to prevent them, but we aren’t doing a very good job at that. It is estimated that almost 40% of all people over the age of 50 have these pockets. It is expected that all people over 90 have them to some degree. What causes these pockets? The easy answer is lack of fiber in our diets, though there are some contributing factors as well. A history of constipation is a good indication that you are in line for this type of trouble. Having the pockets are not the problem, having those pockets become impacted with food that begins to rot is what causes the major issues.
Most of us don’t get enough fiber in our diet. Kristin Stile, N.D, a naturopathic doctor at the Complementary Medicine and Healing Arts Center in Vestal, New York says we should be getting between 25 and 30 grams of soluble and insoluble fiber every day. The best sources for this fiber are fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains like whole wheat, oats and rye. Yet with all these different sources most people find it extremely hard to get that much fiber every day. When that is the case they turn to supplements. If you are having trouble with diverticulitis you still need the fiber, but you have to be more careful as to where it comes from. Insoluble fiber can clog the openings to these pockets, and actually cause the infection you are trying to prevent. Soluble fiber, on the other hand can sooth the irritation and help prevent the infections. If you are healthy you need both, if you are having problems stick to the soluble fiber.
Keeping your digestive system healthy is another key to preventing diverticulitis. The Enriching Gifts Plant Enzymes are a big help here. These enzymes help your digestive system break down the food particles so they are easily absorbed through the intestinal walls. This way the nutrients get into your blood stream and don’t stay large enough to get packed into any pockets that may exist. Because the enzymes aid in digestion many people find they have less constipation from their diet. One key here is to make sure you are getting plenty of fluids throughout the day. Even with the wonderful enzymes if you aren’t getting enough liquid you can become constipated, thus increasing the development of pockets.
Another part of your digestion that can play a key role in preventing infection is having the right bacteria strains in your digestive tract. Enriching Gifts Pro-Biotic with FOS will colonize your colon with the right type of bacteria, thus preventing the bad bacteria from growing there. This reduces the chance of an infection if the pockets do become clogged. Your immune system also plays a key role in preventing infection. Strengthening your immune system with Enriching Gifts Sterol-Max can also help prevent the pockets from becoming infected.
If you do get an infection you can use Enriching Gifts Lightning Colloidal Silver instead of anti-biotics. Anti-biotics can have side effects such as allergic reactions and diarrhea. They can also produce resistant strains of bacteria if used too frequently. This in effect lowers your immune system rather than supporting it. Enriching Gifts Lightning Colloidal Silver is nature’s anti-biotic. In the digestive tract the silver molecules will attach to any bacteria, thereby killing it. It works so well that it can kill the good bacteria as well as the bad, so we recommend following up with the Enriching Gifts Pro-Biotic with FOS, once your symptoms have subsided.
Pamela Taylor, N. D. is a naturopathic doctor in Moline, Illinois. She recommends antioxidants such as A, E and C along with Zinc for her patients.
