Alzheimer's Disease
This is a very difficult article for me to write, because I have some experience with the disease. My mother died from it. Very little is known about the causes of the disease, therefore very little is known about the prevention. What is very well known is the devastation the disease causes on the patient, the family, and the friends. The disease distances the patient from everyone they know. Casual friends will be the first ones to fall away. Then closer friends and more distant family will leave. Those that stick are left with interacting with a shell of a person that they used to know. The personality changes, sometimes becoming more docile, other times they become violent. I was fortunate, my mother became docile. She began depending on me for things I never would have dreamed of.
Beyond becoming a doctor’s best friend there are a few things we can do for our loved ones to make their lives more pleasant. One thing I learned from the care facility where my mother lived was to keep their blood sugar stable. Evidently dips in blood sugar can cause the bizarre behavior we all fear. My mother was docile and very ladylike but they learned very early on that she would try to hit or punch the caregiver if they tried to move her too quickly in the mornings. What they found that worked for her was to give her a piece of toast spread with peanut butter while she was still in bed. This stabilized her blood sugar and allowed them to them get her up and dressed before taking her to the dining room for her real breakfast. The downside to this is that she gained weight. She went from a size eight to a twenty before she died. The upside was that she got to eat the things she enjoyed and no one scolded her for it. There is a middle ground here. Instead of the constant sweets they fed her they could have done the same things with highly nutritious food, thus feeding her nutritionally as well as just keeping her blood sugar up.
Many studies show that Alzheimer’s is diagnosed by the buildup of a harmful kind of plaque. This is actually a protein that is deposited on the brain and in effect smothers the brain cells. What is not known at this time is if the plaque is a cause of the disease, or an effect of the disease. With that in mind there is some hope that by including Enriching Gifts Plant Enzymes in the diet we can slow the formation of these plaques. Enriching Gifts Plant Enzymes have been shown to remove proteins and plaques from the blood stream. If we can remove them from the blood stream there is a chance we can keep them from forming in the brain, or at least slow them down.
Another thing that most articles about Alzheimer’s agree on is that the patient needs plenty of anti-oxidants. One Canadian study showed that there is evidence of more free radicals and the damage they cause in people with Alzheimer’s. Enriching Gifts Metabolic Complete is a very potent form of anti-oxidants. It has been shown to cross the blood/brain barrier, thus getting the antioxidants to exactly where they are needed. This in turn can slow the damage done to the brain by free radicals.
Alzheimer’s patients are known to become picky about what they eat. This is why the facility where my mother was fed her sweets every two hours. They found that the sweet tooth remained active. Rather than fighting with your loved one over what they will and will not eat ensure you are supplementing their diet with a very good vitamin supplement. Enriching Gifts Complete Vitamins Plus is one such supplement. It contains not only the needed vitamins, including the all important B and E vitamins, but also the minerals needed to activate those vitamins. In addition it contains enough of the Plant Enzymes to ensure that all the vitamins and minerals can be utilized. It does no good to give a person supplements if they are unable to digest and utilize them. With the addition of the Plant Enzymes in the capsules Enriching Gifts enables the person to break down and utilize the vitamins and minerals much more efficiently.
A key to prevention that is often overlooked is exercise. We have become much more exercise aware than my mother was. She was taught that a true lady never allowed herself to be seen hot and sweaty. If she was anything my mother was a lady, therefore she rarely did any activity that caused her to break a sweat. If we are to break the chain of this disease we need to break the chains of inactivity. Find something every single day that causes you to break a sweat.
Another form of exercise that has been shown to be beneficial is exercising the brain. Look for ways to make you really think deeply. Crossword puzzles can be helpful. So can continuous learning. So what if you think you will be too old to utilize a degree by the time you get it. Striving for it may keep your mind healthier that it would have been otherwise. Find a subject matter that stimulates you and go investigate it thoroughly. Mine happens to be helping people understand in laymen’s terms what we can do to help our health.
