Constipation, is it more than just a nuisance?

More and more studies are coming out that are linking constipation to some very serious illnesses. But are laxatives the answer? The May Clinic says “If you frequently use certain laxatives over a period of weeks or months, they can decrease your colon's natural ability to contract and actually worsen constipation.”
WebMD says “Calcium carbonate antacids (such as Tums) may cause constipation.”
Dr. Bernard Jensen, bowel health pioneer and author of numerous books, stated “I believe that the number one source of the misery and decay we are witnessing today is autointoxication – self poisoning caused by microorganisms, metabolic waste and other toxins in the body.”
The Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, October 2001, states “published research has listed dysbiosis (imbalance between good intestinal bacteria and bad) as the cause of arthritis, autoimmune illness, chronic fatigue, cystic acne, the early stages of colon and breast cancer, eczema, food allergy/sensitivity, inflammatory bowel syndrome, psoriasis and steatorrhea. All bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections... are linked to dysbiosis.”
The Saturday Evening Post says “Physician Nicholas L. Petrakis and Eileen B. King of the University of California, writing in the Lancet have found that women who have two or fewer bowel movements per week have four times the risk of breast disease(benign or malignant) as women who have one or more bowel movements per day.”
This is an awful lot of bad news, from some pretty heavy sources. But they are only telling you part of the story. You don't have to live with, or die from your constipation. There are healthy, natural things you can do about it.
  1. Take Plant Enzymes by Enriching Gifts with your meals. This is the first step in speeding up the digestion process. The body is meant to take in enzymes with our foods, unfortunately the average diet is severely lacking in enzymes.
  2. Take Enriching Gifts Pro-Biotic with FOS. These are designed to colonize in your system. Unlike other brands you will not need to take them daily to stay healthy. A couple of rounds a year may be enough if the rest of your lifestyle promotes a healthy environment for the good bacteria.
  3. Avoid sugar and other processed foods. These provide a good breading ground for the bad bacteria, but tend to kill off the good bacteria.
  4. If you are still having problems try Daily Detoxification by Enriching Gifts. This is designed to pull the toxins out of your system, including those in your digestive system.
Besides making you feel better there are many other benefits of following this regimen.
Michael Picco, M.D.,Mayo Clinic gastroenerologist states “One study in Sweden found that a group of employees who were given probiotics missed less work due to illness than did employees who were not given probiotics.”
A German study showed that those taking probiotics had shorter colds and less severe cold symptoms. Further testing showed these people had higher whit blood cell counts, thus showing stronger immune systems.
Reuters, February 19, 2008 says”as the researchers report in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, runners who took probiotics averaged 30 days of respiratory symptoms during the course of the study, compared to 72 days for those on placebo.”
John DiBaise,M.D., specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Mayo Clinic states 'Probiotics seem to change how your immune system reacts to an invading microorganism and whether your digestive tract becomes inflamed as a result.”
Fiona MaCrae in London's Daily Mail on August 7, 2006 states “When effective, probiotics can aid digestion and cut thee risk of stomach upsets. Research suggests they help prevent bowel conditions such as ulcerative colitis, protect children against allergies, and may even help reduce the risk of colon cancer. They may be particularly useful for older people, bolstering levels of 'friendly bacteria' which dwindle with age.”
Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno, Jr., a practicing physician and former member of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy says, “Probiotics have resulted in complete elimination of eczema in 80% of the people we have treated.” According to Wired Magazine, April 25, 2007 he has used probiotics to treat irritable bowel disease, acne and even premenstrual syndrome. They say he states, “It's unusual for me to see a patient with a chronic disease that doesn't respond to probiotics.”
More good news is that there are many studies showing that probiotics are safe even for young chidren. One Danish study include children as young as one, while a Polish study included those as young as two months. All were shown to be helped by the probiotics, with no adverse side effects.
