The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved Johnson & Johnson's Pancreaze, a pancreatic enzyme product used to improve food digestion in patients whose bodies do not produce enough of the enzymes.

Patients would include people with conditions such as cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, or removal of all or a part of the pancreas, the agency said in a statement.

Two other companies have pancreatic enzyme products on the market -- Abbott Laboratories and Eurand NV .

The FDA estimated that 200,000 or more patients in the United States need the enzyme products.
